A Structural Race Analysis of First Food
By Center for Social Inclusion
According to the report, 44.7 percent of white mothers are still breastfeeding their infants at six months, compared with 27.5 percent of African-American mothers and 32.3 percent of U.S.-born Latina mothers. The study also found that the scarcity of obstetrician-gynecologists who are trained in breastfeeding practices limits access to information; that women of color are more likely to live in so-called food deserts where formula often is aggressively marketed; and that African-American and Latina mothers are more likely to work in service jobs with long hours and little flexibility, making it difficult to nurse or pump and store breast milk. This report was made possible by the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
