Multilevel Intervention for Low-Income Maternal Smokers in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

The American Journal of Public Health recently published this article by Bradley N Collins and Stephen J Lepore (Temple University) along with Brian L Egleston (Fox Chase Cancer Center). Together they implemented a randomized control trial in which two groups were compared. Both groups, comprised of mothers on WIC, received WIC system level intervention and AAR (ask, advise, refer) intervention which targeted the dangers of smoking and the effects on children. One group received additional MBI (multimodal behavioral intervention) which included nicotine replacement therapy and telehealth counseling, and targeted specific individual deterrents to smoking cessation. Overall they found that the joint AAR + MBI treatment was more successful in reducing child smoke exposure. Using this information, it could be valuable for AAR + MBI interventions to be utilized within WIC clinics in order to decrease the amount of secondhand smoke exposure for young children.
