Research Brief: WIC Participants· Perceptions of the Cash-Value Benefit Increase During the COVID-19 Pandemic
By McKenna Halverson
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated food insecurity among low-income families with children. To mitigate this issue, the American Rescue Plan increased benefits for WIC participants including raising Cash-Value Benefit (CVB) levels. This research brief reports on findings which include WIC participants’ strong support for the increased CVB, as well as its positive effects on their fruit and vegetable purchasing and consumption. Results suggest that permanently increasing the CVB may improve low-income women and children’s health and reduce disparities in dietary quality.
