A public health nutrition intervention was developed in Korea, modeled after WIC. Using combinations of 11 different food items, six food packages were developed. The intervention included nutrition education and promotion of breastfeeding. Ver Ploeg et al. (2015) examined the types of stores households usually frequent for food shopping, how they get there, and how far they travel. The study showed that about 90 percent of all households shop at large stores such as supermarkets and supercenters, and this percentage does not vary much by participation in SNAP or the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), or by income or by mode of travel to the store.
Breastfeeding intent and beliefs as well as pre-pregnancy weight class significantly predicted breastfeeding initiation.
Effective interventions focused on individual- or family-level behavior changes through home visits, individual counseling or group sessions in clinical settings, a combination of home and group visits in a community setting, and using hydrolyzed protein formula. Protein-enriched formula increased childhood obesity risk. Majority are conducted in clinical settings, and few target early-life systems and policies that may impact childhood obesity.
