The Appalachian region includes 420 counties spread across 13 states, from New York to Mississippi. While many have come to know this perse region through stories such as those told in “Hillbilly Elegy,” the true story is much more complex. Many in Appalachia recoil at the frequent stereotypes of the region that are often reinforced in literature, entertainment, and even the news media. As a whole, the region experiences health equity challenges resulting in disparities across leading causes of death, but those challenges run deeper and can be traced to historic underinvestment and economic stagnation.
These communities are also characterized by unique strengths and assets, such as higher degrees of social connectedness, cross-sector collaboration, creative problem solving, and resilience. This session will highlight what is known about Appalachian health inequities and how they vary within the region, with a focus on strengths and assets that can be leveraged to improve health and well-being.
