Wisconsin Participant Testimonial 2018
“I have been lucky enough to be part of the WIC program since my daughter was born in 2013. I’m writing to you because I want to share with you how much of an impact my breastfeeding peer counselor had on me as a new mom. First of all, I want to say that I wholeheartedly believe that every new Mom leaving the hospital with a new baby should have the name and number of someone like her. I’ve shared with her how I feel but I think I should spread the word!
I suffered with postpartum anxiety and depression with my second child and I feel so very fortunate that the WIC program connected me to a BFPC. My son had a couple minor health issues that affected breastfeeding for us right from the start. He had torticollis, a fibromatosis in his neck from the forceps and was born with thrush. We were struggling so much when my peer counselor sent me a message and asked if I had any questions or concerns about breastfeeding. Boy did I ever!
All the little decisions that have to be made when you’re breastfeeding can be a lot to handle to begin with, but you add other circumstances and the stress became overwhelming for me. I leaned on my BFPC’s messages so much in the beginning. I felt as though I was never alone and that I had someone on my team that actually cared about both me and my son. I saw a doctor or two, and a therapist. I have amazing parents and a pretty awesome husband, but it was my peer counselor that helped me through the darkest of days! I believe with her help I achieved my goal of breastfeeding for as long as my baby boy wanted. In fact, he is still nursing! He will be two in April. I’m extremely proud that I have been able to do this for so long! I owe my BFPC and WIC a big thank you.
A side note…her messages were/are so important to me I’ve taken screenshots of all of them and saved them with my photos for me to read when I’m old and grey. Please know what a compassionate, empathetic, knowledgeable, and kind-hearted employee you have and I truly appreciate everything she’s done for me.”
