Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing — Promoting Children’s Early Brain & Language Development through WIC Clinics

Good nutrition combined with language-rich activities like talking, reading, and singing are critical for children’s early brain, health, and language development. In addition to its core services, WIC clinics can play an important role communicating the importance of talking, reading, and singing with children from birth. This webinar shared  Too Small to Fail’s “Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” tools and resources available at no cost to WIC clinics nationwide.

Dr. Amy Emerson, Medical Advisor of Tulsa Educare and Reach Out and Read, provided background on how parents and caregivers could best support children’s early brain and language development. Jane Park Woo, Deputy Director of Too Small to Fail, presented colorful and engaging content (including posters, tip sheets, handouts, and music) to help providers create welcoming, vocabulary-rich environments in WIC clinics and equip them with hands-on materials to share with the families they serve. WIC providers also gained access to resources to help families share conversations, stories, and songs about healthy foods together.
