Comparison of Beverage Consumption Recommendations for Young Children: Key Areas of Misalignment and Opportunities for Improvement
By Kirsten Arm, Lauren Dawson, Megan Lott
This resource is intended for providers and advocates to easily compare and contrast the Healthy Eating Research (HER) Consensus Beverage Recommendations to other beverage guidelines for kids ages 0-5, including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). A table is provided comparing the HER beverage consensus recommendations to the DGA, WIC, and CACFP guidelines for infants and children ages 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-24 months, 2-3 years, and 4-5 years. The table uses color-coding to indicate where guidance is in alignment with HER recommendations (green), where areas of misalignment exist due to the lack of federal regulations for a particular beverage or age group (orange), where recommendations misalign with HER recommendations (red), and where no guidance on certain beverages and groups is provided (grey). A summary of findings and key areas of opportunity for better alignment in U.S. policy guidance are provided. Advocates may find this resource useful for providing evidence and support for WIC food package updates.
