Scott County Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice

Scott County WIC created this poster to highlight their local work promoting healthy food access through partnerships with food banks, Cooking Matters at the Store tours and sharing community resources. This poster was developed during the CPHMC project and was presented at NWA’s Annual Conference in May 2016.

Scott County WIC’s project was mainly focused on increasing healthy produce in the diets of our community. Scott County is located in eastern Iowa with about 167,000 people residing. This project sought to address the inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption in almost 80% of the adult population. The adult obesity rate in Scott County is 31% making it higher than the national and state average. In order to decrease further health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic diseases, this project needed to focus on diet. The goal of this project was to make the healthy choice the easy choice in order for our community to live long, happy lives to their full potential. We helped achieve this goal through in store promotion techniques, nutrition education, increasing access to community resources, and bringing together community members of all facets. The vision for the project was to provide knowledge about healthy food habits on a large scale so that our community can learn together and then teach their children good health.
