The Impact of a WIC Breastfeeding Clinic on Breastfeeding Duration: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

This study examined the breastfeeding percentages based on the survey responses of women who received help at a WIC breastfeeding clinic, the Lactation Foundation, in Houston, TX. The women who participated in the study represented a sample of WIC clients and women in the Houston community who had received help breastfeeding help from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant at the Lactation Foundation and had at least a 6-month-old baby at the time the survey was sent. Study findings showed that 68% of women in the clinic breastfed greater than 6 months, this is above the Healthy People 2020 goals of having 61% of women breastfeed for 6 months. Study findings also showed that the earlier the age of first visit to the clinic the more likely the woman was to report that the Lactation Foundation influenced her confidence to breastfeed. In conclusion, women were very satisfied with their experience at the Lactation Foundation and all women reported that they would recommend the clinic to someone else.
