Enhancing Nutrition Security: USDA Updates to the WIC Food Packages

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 codified the science-based review process that updated the WIC food packages and sought greater alignment with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2017, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine issued a final report with a series of recommendations that could enhance the nutritional quality of WIC foods and improve balanced options for WIC shoppers. USDA put forth a proposed rule in November 2022.
