Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice in Rural Communities
By District Health Department #10
District Health Department #10 created this poster to highlight their local work on healthy food access during the CPHMC project, and was presented at NWA’s Annual Conference in April 2017.
Choosing Health in Lake County sought to make “the healthy choice the easy choice” in Lake County, MI. Lake County is a rural county with a population of 11,431. Lake County has a high rate of children in poverty at 51%. This project looked to make healthy choices easier by improving access to healthy foods with farmer’s markets, labeling healthy options at stores and restaurants, and increasing support for breastfeeding moms. The project also looked to increase community clinical linkages and outreach to the WIC program. Strategies included: creation (and promotion) of a farmer’s market; healthy grocery store labeling; healthy menu identification & labeling, breastfeeding support in local businesses, and strengthening community clinical linkages.
